November 14, 2024, General Membership Meeting Recap

 

The meeting was led by Helen at 7:07 pm.

There were approximately 36 members in attendance.

Martha and her sister, Sam, will be presenting tonight on color theory!

Raffle Winners

Martha won the door prize, a Robert Kaufman Kona color card!

Sonia won the raffle for the Ebb and Flow FQB by Essoldo Design for Windham Fabrics.

Sonia also won the raffle for the Favorite Flowers FQB by Ruby Star Society.

 

Announcements

If you missed our anniversary party/meeting last month, see Laurie K and claim your bag that was given to attendees.

Pay your dues to maintain your membership by Dec 12, our next meeting, or open spots will be offered to people on the waiting list.  They will be given one week to pay their dues.

Susie filled in for Marie and accepted dues payments.   Venmo is accepted (message Marie).  34 have paid tonight!

Events and Programming (Laurie K, and Susan H) 

Next month's programming will be our annual holiday party (Dec 12)

Susan sent  around a sign-up list for food to be brought to next month’s holiday party as we are doing our traditional potluck with hot and cold .

There will also be an optional Yankee swap at the December meeting.  Swap items should be worth $25 and be quilting related. 

 December meeting will start early at 6:30.   All who can should come early to help set up.

QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach challenge quilt: “Modern Strata” (formerly known as Lines Galore). The quilt is just about sewn together and Susie B and Marie J have volunteered to quilt it.

Other News from the Modern Quilt Guild

There is a new free pattern on the resource website - Loading Squares.

QuiltCon admission discount ends at the end of November. If you are attending and signed up for workshops - the supply lists are now available.

Mini Quilt Swap partners should have been notified this week.

Charity (Lesley R and Julie F)

Lesley reported that Julie has contacted and will have more details Nov 18 about supporting a family residence near a Veteran’s hospital.   More info to come. 

Retreats (Ophelia C)

Retreat at the  St. Methodius Center in Contoocook, NH was great!  Most liked the food that was provided and felt that we really got to know each other since we were all eating together.  Ophelia has tentatively booked the center for next November 13-16.   Meal cost is based on a minimum group of 20 people.  If fewer attend, 20 meals must be paid for. A downside aspect is that the sewing space  limits size if we wish a 6-foot table for each person and that the space is shared with other groups at the center.  It was unclear whether we could sew in the Athletic facility once it is completed.

The Franciscan Guest house is still unsure of whether their renovations will occur and they have not committed to allowing us to book the retreat.   Our very tentative spring retreat dates may be  May 15-18.

Elections 

Helen talked about the member interest surveys and that the board plans to have committees of members  assist the committee chairs, especially program and communications to relieve their workload.   She reviewed the slate of people who will be nominated for next year’s positions and the online voting through a Google Form.  The vote was sent out on November 15 and will be open until the end of the day November 22. Results will be announced at the next meeting.

Show and Tell

1. Robin showed her flannel cat charity quilt using the Allure pattern from The Magic of 3 Yard Quilts book by Donna Robertson and Fran Morgan.

3. Sonia has been busy making items for an upcoming craft show and brought 2 of her Christmas stockings to show.
   
   
   
4. Sarah presented her Rainbow Radial quilt (she took the wall hanging, and made it 4 times to make it a quilt!) designed by Audrey Esarey of Cotton and Bourbon.
   
   
   
5. Sarah also showed a Ranges quilt designed by Modern Handcraft.
   
   
   
6. Ashley displayed her scrappy Drunkards Path quilt that has been a WIP for a long time!
   
   
   
7. Cindy showed an improv quilt.

9. Christine presented her quilt she made in virtual workshop with the Kickin' Stash pattern from Eva Paige Designs.

17. Meghan completed her first paper pieced project! This is the Sunny Rainbow Table Topper designed by Kristy Lea of Quiet Play for Riley Blake Designs.
    
    
    
18. Sue P. presented 3 quilts. First up was All Fenced In designed by Pickering Farms.
    
    
    
19. Sue also showed a Tangled quilt by Cluck  Cluck  Sew.
    
    
    
20. Finally, Sue showed a Spring Flags quilt using Sweetwater fabrics (quilt pattern was a Fat Quarter Shop Sew Sampler exclusive)
    
    
    
21. Beth showed her Petite Antique Lace quilt designed by Missouri Star in which she had Ophelia custom quilt in each block! 
    
    
    
22. Beth also made 2 stuffed birds!

24. Simone also made a Paper Boats quilt designed by Cotton+Steel (it's a free pattern!).  You can see her custom quilting really well on the back of the quilt.
    
    
    

Michelle and Simone announced that Jennifer M. is moving back to NH and wants to be on the waitlist to become a member!

Meeting Activity

Martha and her sister, Sam gave out a handout and a summary of the color wheel and  Color Theory Martha demonstrated how she organized her colors for dyeing scarves in the past.   They then gave each table a set of color cards and had members match color swatches to the cards and determine a matching color for their ugly fabric swatches.

November Meeting and Raffle Items

 This month's meeting is scheduled for November 14 at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 for socializing).

Don't forget to bring for this meeting:

• We are collecting dues for 2025!  We will accept $70 checks for renewals from current members starting at the November 14th meeting and continuing through the end of the day of the December 12th meeting. If you can’t make either of the meetings, and want to renew, make sure you get your check to Marie by December 12th. At that point, if we have not reached capacity, people on the waitlist will be contacted and given a short amount of time (less than a week) to join. After that, if we have still not reached capacity, membership will be reopened to current members, and processed sequentially by check delivery date.
• For Thursday's programming - bring a piece of fabric that you're not fond of/you consider ugly to complete an activity with. 
• Also for Thursday's activity - if you have any color tools (color cards, wheels, etc.) bring them with!

This month's programming will be Martha giving an interactive presentation on Color Theory. Martha asked everyone to bring any color tools (color cards, wheels, etc.) they have, plus a piece of ”ugly” fabric to play with.

This meeting was our 10^th Anniversary Celebration Event!

 

The meeting was led by Helen.

There were 35 members in attendance, plus two guests.

At our next meeting in November, Martha will give an interactive presentation on Color Theory. Martha asked everyone to bring any color tools (color cards, wheels, etc.) they have, plus a piece of ”ugly” fabric to play with. 

The December meeting will be our Holiday Party.

Our QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach challenge quilt: “Lines Galore.” Members have completed all the blocks needed for the quilt! There will be an assembly day scheduled soon to put them all together.

Retreats (Ophelia)

·       Our Fall Retreat is coming soon! It will be held November 7-10, 2024, at the St. Methodius Center in Contoocook, NH.

·       One double room space is available. Contact Ophelia for details if you (or a friend you know) would like that spot.

·       Details on the retreat were sent with the October Meeting Reminder/Raffle email. Scroll to the end of the email.

·       Especially important things to know: (1) No personal ironing stations are allowed. The electricity in the side of the room we will set up our machines cannot support irons. There will be irons and large ironing boards for everyone to use.  You may bring your favorite iron if you wish. (2) There are no design walls provided. You can bring a portable one or a flannel tablecloth to tape to a wall with Painter’s Tape.

SHOW AND TELL

Captions below photos give details for each project or quilt.

1.       Mary Lou showed her Lighthouse Inn quilt made in this summer’s Modern Quilt Studio quiltalong. It was quilted by Ophelia – we hope you can see the unique quilting in the photo.

2.       Simone showed a knit t-shirt she made for her sister, which she completed by drafting a pattern from her sister’s favorite ready-made t-shirt.

3.       Tracy showed an applique heart block she made in a class with Simone, in which she tested out various machine applique stitches. She is planning to include one in her Wanderer’s Wife quilt by Jen Kingwell.

4.       Stephanie showed us three pillowcases she made with Halloween fabric for her grandchildren.

5.       Maura showed us her Layer Cake Sampler quilt by Material Girl Quilts.

6.       Patty K showed us three completed WIPS! The first was a rail fence quilt she made from our scrap exchange meeting activity.

7.       The second was a sampler quilt made from one of our year-long block exchanges.

8.       And the third was a Trip Around the World quilt.

9.       Laurie M showed us her Diamonds and Hexies quilt. She hated the pattern so much she wouldn’t tell us the name of the quilt or the designer! She reworked most of the pattern. It was a WIP!

10.   Ophelia showed us four quilts. First, a quilt she made for her daughter who is getting married. This is an enlarged Ski Trip panel quilt by Frannie B. Quilt Company.

11.   Next, her Wayfinder quilt by Brooke Shankland of eudaimonia studio.

12.   Next, her enlarged Balderdash quilt by Emma Jean Jansen.

13.   Last was her Daylesford quilt from Jen Kingwell’s Quilt Recipes book. This was a WIP!

14.   Chelsea showed two quilts. First was her version of the Balderdash quilt by Emma Jean Jansen.

15.   And a Flying Geese quilt, a WIP!

16.   Michelle C showed us her Kitty Cats quilt from Cluck Cluck Sew.

17.   Diane showed us two WIPS! First her Taffy Quilt designed by Coral + Co.

18.   And then her Sparkle quilt designed by Twiggy and Opal.

19.   Robin showed her finished scrappy quilt (designed from a quilt she saw on Pinterest) with a striped binding.

20.   And Helen showed her Passiflora quilt by Hayley Grzych of Bernina.

Thank you so much for telling us the names of the quilts and pattern designers for your masterpieces. Extra special thanks to Ophelia who copied the first page of the patterns she used. It makes it easy to compile these Show & Tell notes and serves as a great resource for all of us!

GUILD WIP CHALLENGE

Julie had three completed WIPS, and amazingly won the first and second gift cards for the challenge! Lynn won the third.

The Anniversary Celebration

Our celebration started with a sparkling beverage toast by Helen, followed by a Member Bingo game. Patty M won the Bingo! That was so much fun!

Then, we enjoyed the cake and other goodies, while socializing and voting for Anniversary Quilt Challenge entries.

Member Gift. The Board decided to purchase Scout Tote Bags for every member. Members claimed their bags in cohorts, defined by how many years they have belonged to the guild. We still have most of the original 10 founding members! (We will make efforts to deliver bags to members who could not attend the meeting.)

The Board thanks all members for your supportive, friendly, and inclusive words and actions throughout the duration of the guild. What an amazing group we are! Here’s to another wonderful 10 years!
