Notes for the Fall Retreat

We are going to have a great retreat, and I can’t wait to see what you’re sewing!
Some significant differences from this retreat and those to which you have grown accustomed…
There is not enough electric circuitry in the side of the room with sewing machines to
accommodate irons of any type. Please plan accordingly. There will be 5 large ironing boards
and 9 good Black and Decker irons, which should be more than adequate for 30 happy sewing
friends. If you have a better iron and are willing to share, then feel free to swap out one of the
B&D ones.
There are no design walls here, so if you need to spread out, you will have to do so somewhere
in the vast spaces available to us elsewhere. For design-wall-dependent projects, consider
laying it out on the floor temporarily and using your phone’s camera to organize the sewing. If
you want to bring a flocked vinyl tablecloth to tape up on a wall, that might work. Bring tape that
won’t pull off their paint, please!
We will be fed heartily by Nick and his staff. They are professionals and are accustomed to
feeding crowds. If you have food allergies or aversions, please consider bringing some
alternate choices; there is a kitchen in the Retreat Lodge for your use. Vegetarian options will be
available at each meal.
As of today, 10/1/24, we have enough tables for all quilters to have an 8’ table. If we grow in
numbers, I may ask those who travel with extra sewing machines tables to share 2 tables
among 3 people, or some such. Either way, you will have plenty of room, and in most cases,
twice the room that the Amoskeag quilters currently get.
We need help! I would like at least 6 people for set-up on Thursday morning at 8AM and 6 for
breakdown on Sunday at noon. (If we are permitted to stay longer that day, we can leave some
tables for late-stayers to break down afterwards.) Nobody can “move in” until all the tables are
set up, but if you are on the set-up crew, you’ll get first dibs to move in and start sewing, as well
as my eternal gratitude. Others may arrive after 10 but if set-up isn’t complete, they can either
pitch in or wait patiently.
Don’t forget to bring your lunch for you day of arrival. Would anyone like to bring a lunch for the
set-up crew? Snacks are welcome; please plan to take home what doesn’t get eaten.
Can you offer use of a cutting mat? We’ll need up to 8 large mats, and if you aren’t arriving until
Friday, you’re still welcome to offer one.
Irons and boards will be available, as will power strips.
Chairs are available but you are encouraged to bring your own if it’ll make your experience
better.
Bring some additional lighting, as the difference between day and night in that room is
substantial. We are delighted to have 24-hour access to the sewing room to accommodate our
early birds and night owls alike!
Retreat Lodge Dwellers:

The Retreat Lodge is their hotel-like accommodations. There is a short walk from the Lodge to
the dining hall, and November can be chilly. For those not able to walk much, you can drive
between the two parking areas easily, but it is a very short distance.
Cabin Dwellers:
The cabins are delightful, but you need warm bedding if you tend to be cold. Bring linens for a
twin bed or a sleeping bag if you prefer. Think layers. You’ll need your own towels, too. If you
like to have a bunch of stuff next to you while you sleep, bring a little table or crate that can hold
things, and an extension cord or power strip for your electronics. If you want to see photos of
accommodations, just ask! You are assured a lower bunk if that is your preference. I suspect
we’ll be in a cabin quite near to the dining/sewing hall, but outdoor clothing may make the short
distance between the two buildings more enjoyable. Since we are so few, (6 as of now,) we will
split by snorers/non-snorers. There’s room in the shared bathroom area to keep a change of
clothing so those leaving early or returning late can minimize interruptions of fellow cabin
dwellers.
If you signed up to come to retreat but haven’t yet paid, now is the time!
