Recap of December 2020 Meeting - Curves and Yvonne Fuchs (Quilting Jetgirl)

                     Sesen

 Sesen, by Yvonne Fuchs

We had a well attended December Zoom meeting.  The main part of our program was a video by Yvonne Fuchs on "Curved Piecing: Beyond the Drunkard's Path."    NOTE that the video is within the members only part of the MQG website -- all NHMQG members are also members of MQG, so if you haven't developed an account you should be able to sign in and view this and other videos (there is a huge amount of material on the website).  Yvonne's Resource List is also available on the MQG website.  Above is a picture of Sesen, one of Yvonne's newest quilts with curves.  See also Yvonne's page of quilt patterns available for sale.

We had a very spirited raffle this month for three items won by Karen A., Susan H., and Marie J.! Thanks to all who participated.

Lucy Boston EPP and Gemology

During the summer and fall, guild members participated in two sew alongs to build skills: Lucy Boston (English Paper Piecing - EPP) and Gemology (Paper Piecing).  We had frequent get togethers via Zoom to discuss the process and show each other our progress.  Below are some examples of members products.

The Lucy Boston blocks are a fun challenge in terms of fussy cutting to create interesting designs and color interaction.  They are also nice because one can do the hand-sewing just about anywhere!

Robin made this colorful table mat out of her Lucy Boston blocks.

Karen's Lucy Boston blocks focused on blue and green fabrics and she was very prolific!

Next are RenĂ©'s multicolored Lucy Boston blocks.

Gail's Lucy Boston squares show how different the blocks can look!

Patty did both the Lucy Boston and Gemology sew-alongs.

And, here are Ophelia's gems!

October 3 Give and Take Workshop

On Saturday October 3, 16 of us had a grand time doing a virtual workshop with Tara Faughnan learning how to build a Give and Take improv based quilt top.  As the photos below show, there was an enormous diversity of results, and we had fun learning the technique.  Tara did a great job checking around with everyone and making the workshop successful.

Eileen's work in progress.  This shows how the quilt top is built from columns of various colors of fabric sewn together which can be set up to create concentrations of various colors interspersed with sashing (black in this case).  The columns are different width's which Eileen's post-it notes at the top are identifying.  Once happy with the arrangement, you then sew the strips together, and make adjustments as you go.

Here is Lori's top, also in progress using blue and green batiks and a light colored sashing.

Pat's top has a definite seasonal flair!

Julie's quilt top is finished, and also uses batiks and a grey sashing.

Mary Lou top is complete, with a focus on pinks, purples and red with a black sashing.

Ashley's top used a light sashing and she worked some triangles into her columns.  She took her leftover fabric and made an improv log cabin, which also looks great.

Gail's top is complete and shows how the sashing can help the eye move around the quilt and the impact of subtle changes in color.
