Renowned fiber artist Janet Echelman will speak about reshaping public art and her monumental aerial sculpture on Sunday, June 7 at 7:00 pm followed by a reception. Echelman is the artist behind the public art sculpture “As If It Were Already Here” revealed at the Rose Kennedy Greenway now on view through October. Her talk is the culmination of Fuller Craft Museum’s Craft in Bloom weekend celebration. Tickets are $25. About the Artist

Janet Echelman builds soft, billowing sculpture at the scale of buildings that respond to the forces of nature — wind, water, and light. She combines ancient craft with cutting-edge technology to create ultra-lightweight sculptures that move gently with the wind in ever-changing patterns. Her art becomes an inviting focal point for civic life and shifts from being an object you look at, to something you can get lost in.

Recent prominent works include: “As If It Were Already Here,” a monumental sculpture suspended over Boston’s Greenway; “Impatient Optimist,” a new ionic piece for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation campus in Seattle giving visual from to their mission; “Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks,” a 745-ft sculpture that premiered at the 2014 TED Conference; and “Water Sky Garden,” a commission for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Echelman was named a 2012 Architectural Digest Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces.” Her TED talk “Taking Imagination Seriously” has been translated into 34 languages with more than a million views. She received the 2014 Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award in Visual Arts, honoring “the greatest innovators in America today.”

About Laura Jasinski

Planning and Design Manager, Rose Kennedy Greenway ConservancyLaura Jasinski is the Planning and Design Manager for the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, the designated steward of the mile-and-a-half long Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.
Laura joined the Conservancy in May of 2010 as an intern and has become a valued member of the organization’s leadership for her ability to manage complex projects and collaborate across Conservancy departments. 

In her current and past roles, Laura served as the Project Manager for the development of the Greenway Carousel at the Tiffany & Co. Grove, the installation of the Dewey Square Demonstration Gardens, the recent installation of a monumental aerial sculpture by Janet Echelman named As If It Were Already Here, and the addition of several other park amenities. She also serves as a liaison to Boston’s design and development community to ensure that Conservancy projects both influence and align with citywide planning initiatives and adjacent developments. In July, Laura will take on the role of Director of Programs and Planning with the goal of further integrating successful park uses and events with capital improvement planning.

Laura holds a BA in Architectural Studies and an MA in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University. Laura’s thesis work on inclusive public spaces will be published in Fall 2015 by the Institute for Human Centered Design.
